Best Buddies in the Garden

Best Buddies in the Garden

Sir Joseph Banks Faculty Advisor, Mark Johnson describes a very active group event
that will have lasting results even beyond creating fond memories for the chapter’s buddy pairs:

As a celebration of Tree Day, the Best Buddies Sir Joseph Banks Chapter decided to improve the school environment by planting some trees and shrubs in the empty area on the school campus.

Because the area is a bit hard to get to, we had to choose plants which do not require
lots of constant care and lots of watering.

The first part of the day was digging the holes for the plants. This took a bit of effort as
the ground was very dry.  Once the holes were dug, we poured some water-saving gel
into the holes. This absorbs water and helps prevent the plant drying out. We had to remove the plants from their containers with great care to avoid damaging the roots.

Luckily, it was a beautiful sunny day so we were able to enjoy ourselves.

Finally all the trees and shrubs were planted and watered and we just have to wait for them to grow. When they are bigger, they will screen off the block of classrooms and provide shade in summer to stop the rooms getting too hot.

We not only had an enjoyable time, we were also able to help the environment. We did our part in helping stop the effects of Climate Change.

A job well done!
