Social Inclusion Cricket Match smashes stereotypes

Social Inclusion Cricket Match smashes stereotypes

The hot weather on Thursday afternoon (26 November 2009) did not deter the players as two teams stepped out for the first annual Social Inclusion Week Cricket Game.

Two teams met at G William Field, Macquarie University to do battle and challenge the myths about intellectual disability and cricket. Players from Macquarie, drawing from a range of grades, trembled at the sight of the Social Inclusion Team. The Social Inclusion Team were wearing sponsored uniforms and had began a campaign of psychological warfare.

Players for the Social Inclusion Team took the field first. Supported by Carolyn, Chris and Mark, calls and chatter of support could be heard. While a little nervous, the Team soon found its footing as wickets began to fall. A few great catches, a sensational bowling effort and sheer determination soon saw the home side’s opening order collapse, at one stage being held for a very intimidating 6 for 48.

As batsmen approached the wicket, they were heard saying, “Treat these guys with respect, they know how to bowl!”

At this time, Macquarie settled into an excellent stand, adding almost another 100 runs and pushing the required run rate up to just over 7 runs per over. While a little unsettled at the start, Macquarie finished with a reasonable 148 from the 20 overs.

After a short break (enough time to add some sunscreen and have a drink of water) the payers returned to the field. Anticipation was high and the onlooking crowd were hopeful for a great result. Unfortunately, the Social Inclusion side struggled with the bat, and Macquarie demonstrated clear ability with the ball. Wickets fell far too quickly for the SI Team’s liking. Whilst a valiant effort was made, the SI Team’s batting order could not stand up to the Macquarie onslaught.

Sadly the SI Team was defeated.

Following the game, both sides enjoyed a great BBQ and a few cold beers completing the age old tradition of sporting achievement and friendship.

The winner on the day was obviously social inclusion. Players and observers both enjoyed the game and managed to challenge the miss held views that people with a disability are not competitive.

We are looking forward to the game becoming an annual event and going on for years to come.

A very big thanks must go out to all players, coaches, Umpire Arthur Watson, Gail Whiteford at Macquarie Uni, Mark Trevaskis at Best Buddies and everyone who attended.
